David was born in the UK but spent more than thirty years living in South Africa, where he met his wife Zulaiga. While working as the finance manager of a faculty at the University of Cape Town, he completed a PhD in Industrial Heritage, and continues to research and consult internationally in this area.
On retiring from the university, David and Zulaiga moved to Brittany, where they bought a house in Rostrenen and then near Guingamp.
