Getting started with Flickr on a PC

The AIKB Photo Club uses the Flickr image sharing platform as a means of communication with members and to allow members to share their photographs. It is also the basis of the club’s monthly challenges, but more about those later.

Step 1

To get started, you need to set up your own Flickr account. This is straightforward and free.

  • Go to www.flickr.com
  • Go to the sign up page.
  • Enter your information – name, age, e-mail address and you will also need to create a password.
  • Click Sign Up.
  • Check your email for a Verification Link.
  • Click Confirm my Flickr account.
  • Sign in to your account.

In addition to having access to the club’s pages, you now have your own Flickr page

Step 2

Once you have set up your own Flickr account, e-mail the club committee on aikb.hopmg@gmail.com and you will be given access to the club’s Flickr site which is under the name of Hands on Photography Members’ Group.

You will receive an e mail to tell you once this has been done and you can then get going. Check your Junk box if nothing arrives.

One you have received the confirmation e-mail you now have access to the club Flickr page, which is private and only accessible to members. You can view members’ photographs as well as all the entries in the monthly challenges under the Discussion heading.

Up-loading your images to the club Flickr page

When you go onto the club’s Flickr site you will find, under Overview a gallery of photographs taken by members. This a great way of sharing your images to a wider audience and often prove to be a point of discussion at club meetings. If you are a beginner to photography, don’t be shy. Your images are not being judged in any way. Sharing your images on the Flickr site is a great way to get feedback and help you improve your photography.

To upload your images to the club’s Flickr site, it looks complicated but it is quite straight forward.

  • First sign into your own Flickr account.
  • Once you have opened your Flickr account, look to the top right hand corner of the page.
  • Between the search box and the bell icon, you will see a cloud icon with a black arrow in it. Click on this and you will be taken to a screen which will allow you search your photo albums and select images to be uploaded

Once you have opened the images you want to upload, these will appear on a new page.

Look in the right hand corner and you will see a blue box which has the number of images to be uploaded. Click on this and you will get a screen with a blue box saying continue to Photostream. Click on this and the images will then be uploaded to your Flickr page.

To upload your images to the club’s Flickr site; on your personal Flickr page, click on Groups. This is just below the header picture.  This will take you to a new page where you can click on Hands on Photography Members Group in blue. The club’s pages will open up.

Again, look for the cloud icon with the black arrow in the top right hand corner.

Click on this and you can then upload images from your personal Flickr page to the club’s Overview page. Members can then see your images, “Fave” them and leave a comment – you will find comments are always positive.

If you have any problems, ask at a club meeting or e mail the committee at aikb.hopmg@gmail.com
